Sarah and I went out to see Mike again today and brought IAN! (Man that kid is HUGE!)

This was the first time Mike had seen Ian since the accident and he was very excited. He got pretty choked up…and with a tear in his eye he said “It isn’t fair.”

Mike was very tired today and his conversation suffered because of it. A lot of what he said was completely without context as far as Sarah and I could figure out. Something about a maiden voyage, something about thumbs… Speaking of which, one thing stood out like a sore thumb.

On the drive out to see him Sarah and I were talking about hummus and I said that I had a jones for some so I am gonna make some as soon as I get home. After about two hours of talking with Mike he suddenly said, “What Scott likes.” Sarah and I asked him what he meant and Mike said, “Hummus, Scott likes hummus.”

Wh-wh-what?! No kidding, neither of us had mentioned it since we got to the rehab center, and I don’t think Mike and I EVER talked about it. That was really really really weird. Our eyes got HUGE and we were amazed. Out of the blue, how the hell did Mike come up with that?

Not much more to relate about the visit, like I said, Mike was really tired. He is getting more frustrated with his condition and is not seeing progress with his rehab/therapy. He is pretty depressed. I hope some people can go out to see him and cheer him up.

I’m going to hit a Toys-R-Us and pick up some toys for him to practice his motor skills before I see him again.

That is all for today’s report! Keep Mike in your prayers, he needs all of them he can get.

Wow! Great job on the hair cut, Andy!

Scott here. Sarah and I drove out today and found Mike wide awake and bored. We both said ‘hey’ and Sarah had to go fill out some paperwork to hopefully get some assistance for disability, etc… I’m sure that it wasn’t a pretty situation on that end but while she was going through that rigmarole hopping through the hoops of paperwork Mike and I had a good hour and fifteen minutes of quality time.

I’ll write more tomorrow, but I know that if Foghorn Leghorn saw me right now he would tell me that I’m about as “…sharp as a bowlin’ ball…”  so I’m heading out.

In other words… STAY TUNED!

OK, I’m back! So, Mike was showing good development (still miles and miles and miles to go) and was sitting up n his wheel chair instead of laying in his bed. Every once in a while he would get stuck repeating things like directions. Asking a lot of questions gave the result that I think he basically wants to come home. He got frustrated when I had to tell him that this isn’t going to happen any time soon but if he keeps up with his therapy he will expedite his healing.

Mike is gaining weight and eating a lot so he is looking much better. He said that day before yesterday they had him standing up for about one minute (with assistance) but that is a good step forward. He can’t really sit up on his own so trying to rearrange himself in his chair reqires assistance.

He is loving having his glasses and was talking about the television shows that he watches. I’m not familiar with them so that conversation wasn’t very enlightening. Let me see…what else…OH! This was funny. Sarah was holding his hand and when she made a note that he had put on some weight and touched his arm he pulled up his sleeve and did a He-Man bicep flex for her! HAhahaha! It was awesome!

Mike really would like to get more visitors so please, folks, go see him. It will mean a lot more to him than it will cost you in money or time.

I don’t know if there are any more benefits coming up but I hope we can get something going. Sarah doesn’t want to say anything but I know she is having a hard time coming up with mortgage $, gas $, insurance, etc… and she really appreciates and needed the help everyone has offered in the past. The nature of Mike’s injuries are not short term. I wish I could say that they are, but Mike really has a very long road ahead of him.

Spirit, Sam Harris & I saw Mike yesterday. Sam was kind enough to drive his car, which he runs on vegetable oil that he gets for free- big plus!
Mike was asleep when we arrived, and woke up glad to have visitors. He looked pretty good and seemed to be putting on weight. Mike’s watcher, Sarah said he had been eating & sleeping most of the morning.
I finally remembered to bring my hair trimmers from home. Mike had mentioned before that he wanted a haircut, and he has been looking kind of shaggy. We talked about what he wanted, and got to it. Mike’s head is now shaved as close as the trimmers would go. His face is shaved, and his sideburns & neck & moustache are trimmed nicely. Mr. Formato is looking much more like himself and seems very pleased with his grooming.
We also talked about bringing him some food next time, and maybe getting him a simple video game to releive boredom & help him work on his eye- hand coordination.
